Aviation Guidelines
FAA is the agency of the United States Department of Transportation responsible for the regulation and oversight of civil aviation within the U.S. Airport size is determined by two key factors. The factors are business-driven for the physical space. The first factor is based on the largest aircraft able to park. The second factor’s on customer enplanement and deplanement statistics.
Way Finding/Technology
In 2017, Southwest Airlines conducted a way to improve airport customer experience. The experiment installed several tech screens throughout a terminal. Screens provided flight information and boosted the reassurance of the aircraft status.
Flyer Rewards
Spirit airlines would select lucky seats for free reward miles. Providing a special surprise during traveling can create loyalty between the customer and the company.
Existing Space
John Wayne Airport is located in Santa Ana, California. John Wayne is the only airport in Orange County that provides commercial passenger and air-cargo service and is the primary provider of general aviation services and facilities in the county.
Future Design
Arconas is a leading manufacturer and distributor of high-performance furniture for airports and transportation terminals. COVID-19 will shift the future of design, and Arconas is providing products to promote social distancing.
Passenger Experience
A gate hold room is the term for the area where most of a passengers time will be. The place provides waiting areas, a station to aid as an office, and a kid zone. This design will focus on both the business zone and an interactive zone for all ages.

Site Plan
A bird's eyes view of Orange County, California. The building is a liner layout style terminal, with three terminals. The airport sits south of California's interstate highway 405.
Space Planning
An initial sketch while following FAA regulations and the preexisting hold-rooms of John Wayne. The blue highlights will be the focal points in the next phase.
Additional Elements
These elements are to encourage engagement with travelers. Flight prices can cause an initial stress on a customer. It was important to find free ways of providing entertainment. Those elements are interactive screens and classic board games.

Seating/Gate Zone
Gate Podium Plexiglas
Plexiglas provides an extra layer of protection between the employees and customers. The feature can be removeable.
Seating
A natural color scheme update to the seating adheres to keeping fixtures that work for any airline. A brown hue for the seats would provide warmth into the space. The provided seating areas consist of both a liner layout and cluster style options. Each seat style includes power outlets.
Queuing Carpet
One way to add a clear direction for the queue lines is by a flooring shift. Carpet tile can reflect the airline brand's colors. Carpet tiles are easily interchangeable.
Interactive Zone
Koa Wood
Koa wood is the second most common tree in Hawaii. In the Hawaiian language, koa , means brave, bold, fearless, or warrior. This wood is selected for the furniture.
Game Pieces
Each game piece for the life-size connect four will be made up of a rubber material. The material will be in brand colors. The material also allows for easy sanitization and reduced sound.
Seating for Anxiety
Rocking stools to soothe your anxiety. “Body rocking, is the often repetitive movements of the body backwards and forwards from the waist. This is often taken to be a comfort, soothing behavior in all ages, and also a behavior that focuses the mind and distracts or maintains sensory input and a sense of body awareness and thus existential integrity.” -Wikia
